2018.12.A-I Yayoi Kusama, All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins immerses the viewer into an environment of near-hallucinatory intensity. The interior walls and ceiling of a dark room are covered in mirrors. On the floor, yellow gourds, individually lit and covered in black polka dots, are scattered like a psychedelic pumpkin patch. Upon entering the room, the door closes behind you, and you see yourself reflected in a seemingly endless sea of glowing pumpkins. The effect is of limitless potential. In her Infinity Mirror Rooms series, Yayoi Kusama explores the nature of infinity and the sublime through an obsessive repetition of her favorite motifs including pumpkins, polka dots, and lights. Pumpkins connote the fertility of the earth and organic regeneration. Her polka dots “replicate endlessly and thus atomize the self into minute particles.” Kusama’s sixty-year career traverses the contexts of Conceptual Art, Pop, Surrealism, and Minimalism, yet is utterly unique. The mirror rooms are at once wholly accessible works of art that activate the viewer as participant, while pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms, focusing on the intersection of individual and communal experience.
