2018.22 Jonas Wood, Snowscape with Barn

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Snowscape with Barn is marked by a complex geometric composition and dense patterning, evidence of Jonas Wood’s unique process of image creation. To produce his works, Wood collages photographs of his subjects taken from multiple perspectives and renders his paintings from the resulting composition. Through this process of representing and re-representing those subjects, Wood increasingly approaches abstraction, combining inconsonant perspectives and scales, overlapping textures, and flattened depictions of space. The resulting flat and graphic nature of Wood’s paintings has led them to be compared to both Cubism and Pop Art, while his use of color and rendering of photographs gesture more toward the influence of Modernism and Pictorialism.

Snowscape with Barn depicts a snowy cabin in the woods, perhaps near Boston, where the artist was raised. Like many of Wood’s environments, the painting is void of people; however, their presence is implied throughout the work. An abandoned red shovel leaning against the cabin is a lone mark of color in an otherwise neutral palette.  Despite his sparing use of color, Wood’s dense and varied use of patterns convey an impressive and textural sense of depth throughout the painting.
