GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This large plate is a superb example of the full range of Kangxi (k'ang Hsi) period famille verte wucai enamel decoration. It is part of a group depicting scenes from the Manchu court. Beneath flying flags, musicians play a trumpet and drum in the foreground. In the center, five warriors compete at archery on horseback as the imperial entourage looks down on the contest from a canopied balcony. Related examples illustrate military events and presentations to the emperor.
The painting on this example is exceptionally fine. The figures and architecture are well-drawn, and the enamels in red, blue, yellow, purple, and green are freely applied, imparting energy to the scene. The rim is enameled with alternating panels of chrysanthemums and brocade patterns.
The underside is decorated with eight Buddhist symbols and scrolls supporting lotuses, as well as a double ring encircling a seal mark indicating that this plate was made as an imperial order. Apparently, therefore, the piece was exported only at a later date.

The scene depicts an equestrian archery contest in the presence of the Imperial Manchu court. The faces of the courtiers and archers and the manes, tails, and legs of the horses are particularly well drawn. The rim is enamelled with alternating panels of chrysanthemums and brocade patterns. The underside is enamelled with scrolls supporting lotuses and with the eight Buddhist symbols. Inside the top rim is an underglaze blue double ring mark enclosing an unidentified two-character mark within a double square.
