2015.8.A-C Shinro Ohtake, Time Strata

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Shinro Ohtake’s Time Strata is autobiographical in nature, presenting a view of the artist’s own practice through accumulated layers representative of time and memory. Consisting of three parts, the work charts past milestones of the artist’s personal and professional life, including his travels to Morocco, Nairobi, London, and the United States as well as seminal works produced over the course of his career. As the title implies, Time Strata is akin to an archaeological excavation in which he mines his past, uncovering layers of memory while visualizing the passage of time. While Ohtake has also made scrapbooks since 1977, he differentiates his collage and scrapbook practice, encouraging the view in this work of a self-portrait in collage.
