2014.11 Konrad Lueg, Untitled (Champignons...)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
During Konrad Lueg’s brief career as a painter from 1963 to 1968—before changing his name and owning the legendary Konrad Fischer Gallery in Düsseldorf—he made major contributions to the discourse around painting and consumerism in Germany. Lueg first became known for staging impromptu exhibitions in unconventional spaces. In 1963, he and Gerhard Richter presented their Living with Pop happening, in which passersby were invited to regard the artists seated as inventoried goods from a store while shoppers milled about. Lueg soon after began to make paintings with patterns that resembled domestic wallpaper and included stencil-like figures. The subject of Untitled (Champignons…) is silkscreened sticker prices for a variety of grocery items including champignons (or mushrooms), condensed milk, and peaches. The proliferation of the motif can be read as an embodiment of Germany’s growing consumer culture, a result of corporate capitalism and political change.
