GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The interior of this bowl is carved with a stylized pattern of two boys climbing among foliage sprays and leaves. During the Song dynasty, the motif of children among lotuses or other plants appeared on various objects, such as bronze mirrors, textiles, and ceramics. The motif is best understood as an emblem of good fortune and fertility, specifically with hopes for numerous progeny.
