2015.33.1.A-L Stephen Antonakos, Hanging Neon

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Stephen Antonakos’s 1965 Hanging Neon is a crucial early work within the artist’s practice and in the context of formal abstract sculpture of the 1960s, when it was exhibited extensively in museums in Europe and across the United States. It was featured also in the artist’s 2007–2008 retrospective at the Benaki Museum–Pireos, Athens, and in the exhibition Dynamo: A century of light and motion in art, 1913–2013 at the Grand Palais, Paris. Its innovative suspension from the ceiling allows the bare diagonal red and turquoise neon tubes to probe into the space that the work shares with the viewer kinetically and visually. Its colored glows fill the surrounding space and redefine its architecture.
