GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Relatum is the title Lee Ufan has given to all of his three-dimensional works beginning in 1968. The title, a Latin word and philosophical term referring to two or more related things, describes the relationship Lee’s sculptures foster between their materials, the space they occupy, and the viewer. Lee himself positions and drops the stone when this work is installed, and considers this action to be the activation of the sculpture. The weight of the stone, the fragility of the glass, and the strength of the steel are invisible until the glass is cracked, revealing their material qualities and making apparent to the viewer a tension both between the sculptural media and within the space.
