GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In Christianity, Saint Jerome is considered one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church. He divided his life between scholarship and ascetic practices. His great contribution to the Church was a new translation of the Hebrew Bible into Latin (the Vulgate). In visual art, Saint Jerome is almost always accompanied by a lion. Legend told that during one of Jerome's journeys, he and his fellow travelers encountered a lion who was limping grievously. The other monks fled, but Jerome, in complete confidence, examined the lion's paw and removed a deeply embedded thorn. The lion showed its gratitude by becoming Jerome's constant companion. In addition to this feline the saint is depicted as an old man, sometimes in the red hat and crimson robes of the Church. More often, Saint Jerome is shown as a hermit in the desert, beating his breast with a stone and praying or writing, while a crucifix, a skull, and an owl are near by.

NOTES
Removed Garofalo's Virgin Mary with Saint Jerome TMS tag (1939.2) as part of the October 2015 revision process.
This note was appearing incorrectly in Brain in early 2016 and I believe the problem was caused when I removed the original #draft tag to add information. While the note was tagged #incomplete, the previous version continued to appear in Brain as a note that had an incomplete rule (and other inconsistencies). The incorrect note as it appeared in Brain was created on May 11, 2015, updated on January 23, 2016, and last harvested on January 26, 2016. As of May 9, 2016 I am removing the #incomplete tag and retagging the note as a #draft because I have verified all constituent information has been properly entered into TMS.
