Demeter (Greek goddess)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Demeter is the Ancient Greek goddess of the harvest. Beyond controlling the Greek's main source of food, she also was believed to oversee the cycle of life and fertility. Demeter is commonly known as the mother of Persephone, whose abduction is the start of the mythical origins of seasons. Persephone, was stolen by Hades, lord of the underworld. When Demeter mourned her daughter, the land withered and died. Persephone was released to the upper world, but since she had eaten several pomegranate seeds during her captivity, she had to return to Hades for the winter months. This kind of life/death/rebirth fertility myth has parallels in the Near East and Egypt.

NOTES
Removed the TMS tag for Zorach's Demeter (1945.14) as part of the October 2015 revision process.

Glossary term adapted from label copy for (1974.87.FA)

EAS- opriginally wanted to add this as the depicted individual for objects including 1945.15. Creating constituent records for deities will be difficult and at this time no one sees this as useful. EAS- when creating constituent record, also complete or reference the constituent record for Diana (Roman goddess).

Removing the following image asset because it may cause confusion because the object is not in our collection, also reducing the use of external image assets unless no depiction of the person/idea exists in DMA collection.

UMO tag added to note (EAS, 08/08/2016)

Can use Zorach's Demeter to illsutrate CC in the future if possible to tag with the accession number. (#: Object)?

This note has been routed and revised and I am removing the routed tag, adding the completed tag, and moving the GDoc to be reviewed by Queta. (EAS, 2/28/2017)
