GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Photographer and filmmaker Thomas Demand was born in Munich, Germany, in 1964. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich (1987-89), the Düsseldorf Art Academy (1989-92), Cité des Arts, Paris (1992), Goldsmiths' College, London (1993-4), and Rijksakademie, Amsterdam (1995). In his large-scale photographs depicting staged interiors and natural phenomena, Demand plays upon the simultaneous truth and artificiality of photography: he constructs life-size, three-dimensional models from paper and cardboard, and destroys them after he has photographed them. Demand uses the same sculptural practice to make his films, the first of which was Tunnel (1999), for which he constructed the tunnel in which Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash.
