GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Born April 03, 1903, Lola Álvarez Bravo was recognized for her work as a photographer under the guidance of her husband, Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Her career took off after her divorce in the 1930s, when she was hired by El Maestro Rural magazine. She engaged in visual languages that spanned from surrealism to portraiture. Besides her work as an artist, Lola Álvarez Bravo owned her own gallery—where she exhibited the work of Frida Kahlo—and taught photography at the National School of Fine Arts, training an important generation of photographers. The full archive of Lola Álvarez Bravo's work is located at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson, which also manages the copyright of her work. Álvarez Bravo died on July 31, 1993 in Mexico City.
