Yinka Shonibare (b. 1962)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Yinka Shonibare MBE was born in London in 1962 and raised in Nigeria. He returned to England to attend school and remained there. He is recognized as one of today's leading artists exploring the intersections of culture, politics, and identity in the post-colonial world. In 2005 Shonibare became a Member of the Order of the British Empire, a designation he invariably places after his name. In doing so, Shonibare lays claim to both his English and Nigerian origins, with his art, whether in sculpture, installation or photography, deftly extrapolating from both.
