Andrew Dasburg (1887-1979)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Andrew Dasburg was born in Paris in 1887. After his father died he moved with his mother to Nittel, Germany and in 1892 to New York City. He was injured in a fall, and in 1894 he attended a school for crippled children where he learned how to draw and work with wood and metal. In 1902, Dasburg went to study at the Art Students League where he studied under Robert Henri. While there he divided his time between trips to Europe and to Woodstock, New York, then a burgeoning artists' colony. In 1913 he had three paintings and a sculpture exhibited in the Armory Show. By the 1920s, Dasburg was spending part of every year in New Mexico. In later life he was plagued with illness and personal problems, but continued to paint sporadically until his death in 1979.
