GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Jean Dubuffet was born in Le Havre, France in 1901. In 1918 Dubuffet attended Academie Julian for six months before he decided that he was not interested in learning art in an academic setting. It was not until the age of 41, after several abortive attempts, that Dubuffet, a wine merchant, finally decide to devote himself to painting. He then began to work in a predominantly experimental style using a variety of materials. His first paintings were views of Paris and its metro, which were followed in 1946 by Mirobolus, Macadan & Cie, Hautes Pates (thick impastos of sand, gravel, plaster, and asphalt) that scandalized the usually blasé Parisians. His on-going interest in the artistic products of the mentally ill and amateurs led to his collection of such works, as well as to exhibitions which incorporated his own work. He himself coined the expression "art brut" to denote' the spontaneous, unconscious, and anti-artistic qualities of such works, in which he found a heightened and unspoiled creativity. Their influence, along with that of children's drawings and Paul Klee, gave Dubuffet's work an evocative, powerful force, especially when combined with his nontraditional materials and textures. From 1956 onward his style took on a jigsaw pattern which often juxtaposed geometric and inorganic shapes with dried flowers, leaves, or polyester resins. Dubuffet extended his expressive range in this manner and created organic means of showing matter in transformation. However experimental his work was, he succeeded in breaking with the traditional concept of plastic composition, at a time when geometrical abstraction dominated the painting world. Dubuffet died of emphysema in Paris in 1985
